Shopify development

Shopify developers, by the hour or on tap

Shopify developers for theme work, custom functionality, app integrations and the things your theme cannot do. Available as one-off hours from $100, in discounted blocks, or as a standing technical team from $1,500 a month for businesses whose marketing team is blocked on dev.

This is for you if

You know what you need built, and you need someone competent to build it without a three-month agency engagement.

Signs you need it

  • Your theme cannot do the one thing your business needs
  • An app broke something and nobody can work out what
  • You are paying for five apps that overlap
  • Your marketing team has ideas and no one to implement them
  • A developer disappeared mid-project and left it half done

Not for you if

If you want someone to decide your strategy and own your roadmap, you want an agency, not a development resource.

Technical Team: $1,500 from, scaled to the hours you need

If your marketing team is great, but blocked on dev.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Small stores generally do not need much custom development. They need a small amount of it, competently, at moments when nothing else will do.

That is an awkward amount of work to buy. Agencies are set up for projects with a discovery phase and a minimum size. Marketplaces are cheap and a lottery. Hiring is absurd for twenty hours of work a year. So the usual outcome is that the thing does not get built, or it gets built badly by whoever was available and breaks at the next theme update.

We sell it in the shape it is actually needed. One-off hours when you have one problem. A block of hours when you have a list. A standing technical team when you have a marketing function that is permanently blocked waiting on someone to implement things.

Two things we do differently, and both are about what happens after we leave. First, customisations are built so the next theme update does not undo them, which mostly means not editing things that get overwritten. Second, where it is reasonable, we build so your own people can change the content afterwards without calling us. A section your marketer can edit is worth more than a hard-coded one they cannot.

We will also say no. A meaningful share of Shopify development requests are better solved by an existing app, a setting nobody found, or by deciding the feature is not worth it. Telling you that costs us billable hours and saves you more, which is the whole basis on which anyone should hire a developer they cannot supervise.

What is included

  • Theme customisation and fixes that survive the next theme update
  • Custom sections and blocks your team can then edit without us
  • App integrations, and removal of the ones fighting each other
  • Connections to stock, warehouse and accounting systems
  • Checkout and cart functionality within what Shopify actually allows
  • Performance work aimed at real mobile devices, not lab scores
  • Honest scoping, including when the answer is that it is not worth building

Questions

What people ask about shopify development.

What do you charge for development?

One-off work is $100 an hour with no commitment, charged in half-hours. A ten-hour block is $90 an hour and a twenty-hour block is $80. If you are already on a monthly plan, extra development is $75 an hour. Larger builds are quoted as a fixed price so you are not exposed to an open-ended meter.

What access do you need to my store?

A collaborator account with only the permissions the work needs, requested through Shopify and approved by you. Never your password. Every action we take is recorded in your store's own activity log, independently of us, and you can revoke the access yourself in a couple of clicks without asking us first.

Can you take over a project someone else abandoned?

Usually. The first step is a paid look at what exists, because inheriting undocumented work sight-unseen and quoting a fixed price for it would be dishonest. Sometimes the finding is that restarting is cheaper than finishing, and we will say so.

Will you tell me if I do not need custom development?

Yes, and it happens often. If an existing app or a Shopify setting does the job, that is the recommendation, even though it earns us nothing. Building something bespoke that you then have to maintain forever is the expensive option and it should be the last one.
